Xbox CEO Says Game Pass Isn’t for Everyone, and That’s the Point

In a recent interview, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer clarified that Xbox Game Pass isn’t intended for every gamer. According to Spencer, the popular subscription service serves a specific purpose within Xbox’s larger gaming ecosystem and should be seen as an option, not a necessity.

“For us, Game Pass is just one of many models we offer,” Spencer explained. “Some players prefer free-to-play games, others buy games individually, some take advantage of discounts—and then there’s Game Pass. It’s a tool for gamers who want to discover and build a diverse library of games, but it’s not meant to be the only way to play.”

He emphasized that while Game Pass is a healthy choice for certain users, the goal isn’t to convert every gamer into a subscriber. Instead, Xbox focuses on increasing playtime and giving players more flexibility in how they access content.

Console Isn’t King Anymore—Growth Is in PC and Cloud

Spencer also shed light on the shift in Xbox’s growth strategy. The biggest expansions are now happening on PC and cloud platforms rather than consoles, which he described as a strong but mature market. Despite this, he reassured that consoles still play a vital role in the Game Pass experience.

Xbox + Nintendo? Still Friends

In the same interview, Spencer addressed Xbox’s relationship with Nintendo, confirming that the partnership remains steady as Nintendo prepares for the release of its Switch 2. Rather than seeing the new console as competition, Spencer called it a source of “inspiration,” stressing that each company thrives in its own lane.

Game Pass Lineup: What’s Leaving, What’s Coming

While several titles are about to exit the Game Pass library—including Have a Nice Death, Sniper Elite 5, and The Last Case of Benedict Fox—players can also look forward to exciting new additions. Recent updates include GTA V for Xbox Series X|S and PC, along with upcoming games like Towerborne, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Neon White, and more.
