Trump Endorsement Win added another victory to the president’s record in Republican primary elections after Representative Julia Letlow secured Louisiana’s GOP Senate nomination in the runoff election.
Letlow defeated Louisiana State Treasurer John Fleming to capture the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate. The result followed a closely watched contest several weeks after Senator Bill Cassidy lost his bid for a third six-year term in the Republican primary.
The outcome strengthened the president’s influence in Republican nomination contests. Letlow finished first in the primary with a double-digit lead over Fleming, while Cassidy placed third. No candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote. As a result, Letlow and Fleming advanced to the runoff.
Cassidy’s defeat marked a notable political milestone. He became the first elected Republican senator to lose renomination since former Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana in 2012. Cassidy had faced continued criticism from President Donald Trump after voting to convict him during the second impeachment trial.
After the runoff, Trump congratulated Letlow on social media. He described her victory as positive news for Louisiana Republicans. He also praised her campaign and expressed confidence that she would serve effectively in the Senate if elected in November.
Throughout the campaign, Letlow highlighted Trump’s endorsement. Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, another prominent Trump ally, also supported her candidacy.
Letlow first entered Congress in 2021 after winning the seat originally secured by her late husband, Luke Letlow. He died five days before taking office following his 2020 election victory. Since then, she has represented Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District.
Her runoff opponent, John Fleming, previously served eight years in the U.S. House. He later became deputy White House chief of staff during Trump’s first administration. During the campaign, Fleming described himself as the most conservative candidate in the Republican field.
Trump Endorsement Win also reflected a broader trend throughout this election cycle. Trump-backed Republican candidates have defeated several incumbents and establishment-supported opponents in statewide and congressional contests.
Recent victories came in Republican Senate and gubernatorial primaries across South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and New York. Several endorsed candidates advanced successfully. However, a few races showed that endorsements did not always guarantee victory.
One setback occurred in Iowa. Representative Randy Feenstra lost the Republican gubernatorial primary despite receiving Trump’s late endorsement. Businessman Zach Lahn narrowly won the contest with support from organizations aligned with the Make America Healthy Again movement and Turning Point USA.
Additional runoff victories followed. Representative Barry Moore won Alabama’s Republican Senate runoff. Representative Mike Collins secured Georgia’s Republican Senate nomination after receiving Trump’s endorsement shortly before the election. Meanwhile, Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones lost the Republican gubernatorial runoff despite endorsements from both Trump and Governor Brian Kemp.
Looking ahead, Letlow will enter the general election as the Republican nominee. Republicans have held the Senate seat in Louisiana for years. She is expected to face the winner of the Democratic runoff between farmer Jamie Davis and Navy veteran Gary Crockett.
Trump Endorsement Win remains another example of the president’s influence in Republican primary elections. Candidates continue competing for congressional seats ahead of the midterm elections.
