“iPhone ‘Accessory Uses Too Much Power’ Error: Causes and Quick Fixes Explained”

Many iPhone and iPad users have reported encountering the frustrating “This accessory uses too much power” error message after updating to iOS 18.01. While most software-related issues are resolved with subsequent updates, this particular problem can often stem from hardware-related issues, which aren’t always fixable by a simple software patch.

Why Does This Happen?

The error message appears when an external accessory, such as a charger, microphone, or USB device, draws more power than your iPhone or iPad can supply. This is particularly common when using devices like the USB-A Camera Adapter to connect a pen drive to your iPhone. These devices require more power than what the iPhone can offer when it’s not connected to a charger, triggering the “too much power” warning.

The issue can also occur when you’re charging your iPhone or iPad. If either the power brick or charging cable isn’t functioning properly, the error may appear as well.

How to Fix It

Despite being a hardware issue, the fix may be simpler than you think. Apple suggests starting with a basic solution: unplug all accessories and force restart your iPhone or iPad. This often resolves the issue by clearing any temporary system glitches.

If the error appears while using an external device, consider switching from a USB-A Camera Adapter to the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter. The Lightning to USB 3 Adapter features both a USB-A port for your device and a Lightning port for charging. By connecting the charger to the Lightning port, your iPhone or iPad will have the necessary power to support the connected device.

For charging issues, ensure that you’re using an official Apple charger and a power brick of at least 18W. Third-party chargers or broken cables can trigger the “too much power” error. If the issue persists after trying these solutions, it’s advisable to contact Apple support or visit a nearby Apple service center for further assistance.
