Apple Intelligence is facing scrutiny

Apple Intelligence is facing scrutiny again, but not for the reasons the tech giant might prefer. Apple now finds itself embroiled in a false advertising lawsuit over the capabilities of its AI-powered Siri, which was prominently promoted during the launch of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro smartphones.

The lawsuit, filed in San Jose, California, alleges Apple misled consumers by advertising advanced AI features that have yet to materialize, despite being prominently showcased at the device’s launch. Specifically, it argues that Apple created an expectation among consumers that transformative AI functionalities would be available immediately upon release, yet six months later, these features remain delayed without a clear release timeline.

At the center of the lawsuit is an advertisement starring actor Bella Ramsey, known for their role in “The Last of Us.” The ad demonstrated Siri’s ability to utilize personal context and on-screen awareness to manage tasks like scheduling appointments seamlessly. Following the announcement of delays, Apple has quietly removed this ad from platforms, further fueling controversy.

Filed by Clarkson Law Firm, a legal team previously involved in litigation against other major tech companies, the lawsuit specifically targets Apple’s unreleased iPhone features, rather than those capabilities, such as Genmoji, which have already launched successfully.

The lawsuit asserts, “Contrary to Defendant’s claims of advanced AI capabilities, the Products offered a significantly limited or entirely absent version of Apple Intelligence, misleading consumers about its actual utility and performance. Worse yet, Defendant promoted its Products based on these overstated AI capabilities, leading consumers to believe they were purchasing a device with features that did not exist or were materially misrepresented.”
