A Georgia high school biology teacher faces serious criminal charges this week. Maris Nichols, 25, allegedly sexually abused a student on two separate occasions. One of those incidents involved a closet assault inside her classroom at Alexander High School. Therefore, the Douglas County court set her bond at $40,000 on May 8.
The first closet assault allegedly occurred on April 23 in a classroom closet. Subsequently, a second incident took place on May 2 inside a Hummer. That vehicle sat parked in a residential driveway at the time. Warrants accuse Nichols of having intercourse with the student. Consequently, she now faces two counts of sexual assault by a person with supervisory authority.
School officials learned of the allegations and acted quickly. They notified parents about the situation just before Nichols’ arrest. The Douglas County School System immediately launched its own investigation. A district statement expressed deep concern over the troubling allegations. Law enforcement officers had already visited the school on Wednesday afternoon. They spent several hours investigating the matter on campus.
Nichols appeared before a judge on Friday, May 8. The court set her bond at $40,000 following that hearing. Jail records show she has since been released from custody. The school district has not commented on her current employment status. Nevertheless, Nichols no longer appears on the high school’s website. Her teaching photo and name have both been removed entirely.
This closet assault case raises broader concerns about student safety. Schools must maintain proper supervision and reporting protocols at all times. Legal experts say teachers hold significant power over vulnerable students. Therefore, any abuse of that authority carries severe legal consequences. The investigation remains active as prosecutors review all evidence. Nichols will likely face a trial date in the coming months. Meanwhile, the district continues its internal review of safety procedures.
