United Airlines is planning its largest international expansion yet, adding 10 destinations and 13 routes for summer 2027. The international expansion will strengthen connections between the United States, Europe and Asia.
The airline announced the new routes on August 25, highlighting several destinations that currently lack nonstop connections from the United States. Moreover, seven of the new destinations do not currently have direct U.S. service, giving travelers more options for international trips.
The new destinations include Ljubljana in Slovenia, Luxembourg, Ibiza and Valencia in Spain, plus Marseille and Toulouse in France. United will also add Catania and Olbia in Italy, Terceira in Portugal and Okinawa in Japan.
Most new services will begin between March and June 2027. Meanwhile, United’s Newark hub will receive eight new European destinations, making it the biggest beneficiary of the expansion.
United will also introduce three additional international routes from existing U.S. hubs. Los Angeles will gain nonstop service to Osaka, while Denver will receive a new connection to Paris. Furthermore, Washington Dulles will gain nonstop flights to Milan.
The Los Angeles-to-Osaka service will operate daily throughout the year using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Similarly, Denver-to-Paris will operate daily with the same aircraft beginning in May 2027.
The Washington Dulles-to-Milan route will operate three times weekly using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Consequently, United will strengthen its European network while providing additional choices for travelers across several major U.S. cities.
A major part of the international expansion will involve United’s new Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The long-range narrow-body aircraft allows United to serve smaller international markets without requiring larger wide-body planes.
United plans to use the A321XLR on five new European routes. Those destinations include Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia and Marseille. Additionally, the aircraft will feature United’s Polaris business-class suites and upgraded premium economy seating.
The aircraft could therefore help United reach destinations where passenger demand may not justify larger aircraft. At the same time, its longer range gives the airline greater flexibility when developing new international services.
Ljubljana will become United’s newest destination in Slovenia, connecting the capital with Newark. The route gives American travelers another gateway to Slovenia and the nearby Alpine region.
Ibiza will also join United’s network through new Newark service. Meanwhile, Valencia will become another Spanish destination as the airline continues expanding its presence across the country.
Italy will receive two additional destinations through Catania in Sicily and Olbia in Sardinia. As a result, United will offer travelers more direct options for visiting popular Mediterranean islands.
France will gain two new United connections through Marseille and Toulouse. Marseille provides access to southern France and Provence, while Toulouse remains closely associated with Airbus and aerospace manufacturing.
United will also expand its Azores network with service to Terceira. Unlike several other new routes, this service will use a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with domestic-style first-class seating.
In Asia, Okinawa represents the airline’s only new transpacific destination in this expansion. United plans to connect San Francisco with Naha Airport beginning in March 2027.
Overall, the international expansion reflects United’s continued focus on adding destinations beyond traditional major tourist hubs. The airline is targeting established markets and smaller cities where direct service could attract new demand.
The new routes also demonstrate how aircraft technology can influence airline network decisions. In particular, the A321XLR gives United additional opportunities to operate long-distance flights with smaller aircraft.
United expects the new routes to become available for booking for 2027 travel. Therefore, travelers planning international trips next summer will have significantly more nonstop options from several American cities.
