Kaptur released her first video statement since the August 2 collision involving her congressional staffer. She said both she and staffer Keegan Zimmerman remain in good condition after the incident.
The congresswoman appeared seated in what looked like a wheelchair while speaking from an office. She credited thousands of supportive messages with helping maintain her spirits throughout the recovery process.
Kaptur said supporters from Toledo, Ohio, and communities across America reached out after learning about the accident. She also expressed gratitude for messages arriving from people around the world.
The 22-term congresswoman said she recently moved into physical rehabilitation after leaving the hospital. Furthermore, she emphasized that the upcoming House recess gives her valuable time to recover.
Kaptur and Zimmerman traveled toward a church service when another vehicle struck their car. Police described the incident as a hit-skip crash because the other driver apparently failed to remain.
Ohio law uses the term hit-skip when a driver leaves the scene following a collision. Authorities have not indicated that Kaptur or Zimmerman caused the accident.
Kaptur suffered injuries that her office previously described as non-life-threatening following the collision. She remained alert after the crash and received treatment at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center.
During her video, Kaptur praised the medical professionals who treated her after the accident. She particularly highlighted emergency responders, firefighters, police officers and medical personnel who assisted those involved.
The congresswoman also praised the hospital staff for providing care to patients throughout the surrounding region. She emphasized their role in treating people who often face limited access to healthcare.
Kaptur’s recovery comes during an important period in her political career. She is seeking another House term while preparing for a rematch against Republican Derek Merrin.
The Toledo-area contest ranks among the competitive House races that could influence control of Congress. Kaptur narrowly defeated Merrin during the 2024 election, winning by slightly more than half a percentage point.
A Libertarian candidate also received approximately 4% of the vote during that contest. Consequently, both parties expect another closely fought campaign when voters return to the polls.
Kaptur has represented her Ohio district since 1983, making her the longest-serving woman in House history. Her lengthy tenure has made her a prominent Democratic figure in Ohio politics.
Nevertheless, her current recovery temporarily shifts attention away from campaigning and toward her physical rehabilitation. The House’s August recess allows her additional time before lawmakers return to Washington.
Kaptur said she expects to remain away from Washington until next month. She described the additional recovery period as a blessing because it provides time for continued healing.
The congresswoman also used her message to thank people who supported her following the crash. She said those expressions of encouragement significantly strengthened her determination during recovery.
Near the end of the video, Kaptur shared a handmade get-well card from a young supporter. The card featured a drawing of a brown dog named Charlie, whom Kaptur affectionately described.
She explained that the child’s family worried about her condition and wanted to send encouragement. Kaptur said messages like that have helped lift her spirits during an otherwise difficult period.
Kaptur Recovery now remains the immediate priority before she returns to Washington and the campaign trail. Her office has not announced a specific date for resuming congressional activities.
For now, Kaptur continues rehabilitation while preparing for the next stage of her recovery. Her latest message offered reassurance that she expects to regain her strength before returning to public duties.
