Colorado’s House race entered a new phase after Manny Rutinel secured the Democratic nomination in a closely watched primary. The Colorado House race is expected to attract national attention because it could influence the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Rutinel, a member of the Colorado House of Representatives, won the Democratic primary for Colorado’s 8th Congressional District. He will now face Republican Representative Gabe Evans in the Nov. 3 general election.
The district is considered one of the nation’s most competitive congressional contests. Republicans currently hold a narrow House majority, making several battleground districts especially important during the 2026 election cycle.
Evans won the district in 2024 by just 0.8 percentage points. That narrow margin has encouraged both parties to invest heavily in the upcoming race.

He pledged to defend Social Security and Medicaid while supporting larger tax credits and lower housing costs. Following his primary victory, Republican officials sought to connect Rutinel with New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani. They pointed to similarities they believe exist between their political platforms, including support for progressive economic policies such as higher taxes on wealthy individuals and universal healthcare.
A spokesperson for Evans previously argued that those policy proposals would not appeal to Colorado voters. After the primary, Evans described Rutinel as a candidate whose positions differed sharply from his own priorities.
In a campaign statement, Evans said he would continue focusing on public safety, economic growth, and support for Colorado families. He also highlighted his background as a former police officer, Army veteran, grandson of Mexican immigrants, husband, and father.
Republican campaign organizations also responded to the primary results. They argued that progressive candidates are increasingly competing in closely contested congressional districts rather than only in heavily Democratic areas.
Another Republican-backed organization highlighted a campaign video showing someone appearing to be Rutinel standing behind Mamdani during a campaign event. The group argued the footage demonstrated a political connection between the two candidates.
Rutinel’s campaign has emphasized different priorities throughout the election cycle. His platform focuses on healthcare access, tax policy, affordable housing, and immigration issues. Supporters view those proposals as central to his campaign message heading into the general election.
