Melat Kiros secured a significant Democratic primary victory in Colorado, marking another notable result in the party’s progressive movement. The Democratic primary victory ended Representative Diana DeGette’s three-decade tenure representing Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. It also highlighted continued momentum for candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Kiros, a 29-year-old lawyer and Ph.D. student born in Ethiopia, defeated DeGette in the Democratic primary for the Denver-based congressional district. The district has consistently favored Democratic candidates in recent elections. That history makes the primary outcome especially significant ahead of the November general election.
The victory followed several recent successes by DSA-backed candidates in other Democratic primaries, including contests in New York City. Before the Colorado election, the organization publicly expressed confidence that its momentum would continue beyond the East Coast into western states.
If elected in November, Kiros would join a small group of House members identified with democratic socialist policies. Her campaign received endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Justice Democrats, and political commentator Hasan Piker.
Throughout the campaign, DeGette emphasized her legislative experience and seniority in Congress. She argued that her committee positions would help advance priorities such as Medicare for All. She also highlighted her role as an impeachment manager during President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial in 2021.
Although both candidates generally supported progressive policies, they differed on Israel, antisemitism, and campaign financing. Kiros criticized DeGette for accepting corporate political action committee contributions. She presented herself as an alternative progressive candidate.
Kiros previously worked at a New York law firm before her employment ended in 2023. The change followed publication of an open letter. The letter argued that pro-Palestinian student protesters calling for the elimination of Israel were not antisemitic. It also appeared to defend Hamas.
During the campaign, Kiros also faced scrutiny over several public comments about Middle East issues. She described the October 7, 2023, attacks against Israel as the “inevitable consequence of apartheid.” She also declined to characterize a deadly firebombing attack targeting demonstrators in Boulder as antisemitic. Kiros said she could not determine the perpetrator’s motivations. She added that innocent people had been attacked.
A bipartisan congressional resolution adopted in June 2025 condemned the Boulder attack. It described the incident as part of a rise in ideologically motivated attacks against Jewish individuals. Every participating lawmaker supported the resolution except Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Thomas Massie, who voted present.
Kiros also commented on the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks during a television interview. She said they were inevitable because American foreign policy had destabilized parts of the Middle East. She added that addressing conditions leading to violence should remain a priority.
DeGette argued that Kiros’ public statements about terrorism, antisemitism, and Hasan Piker raised serious concerns. She publicly disagreed with Kiros’ comments. DeGette also criticized what she viewed as excusing acts of terrorism.
Colorado’s 1st Congressional District remains the state’s most Democratic-leaning congressional seat. Former Vice President Kamala Harris carried the district by 56 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
The race also included University of Colorado Regent Wanda James. Her candidacy added another dynamic to the primary contest. Although James did not emerge as the leading challenger, her share of the vote may have influenced the final outcome.
The Democratic primary victory reflects continuing debates within the Democratic Party over its ideological direction and future leadership. The result also underscores the growing influence of progressive organizations in competitive Democratic primaries. The Democratic primary victory is expected to remain part of broader discussions about party priorities heading into future election cycles.
