AI Spending weighed on investor sentiment after Tesla and Alphabet reported larger investment plans alongside their latest quarterly earnings. Although both companies highlighted future growth opportunities, rising capital expenditures pushed their shares lower during premarket trading.
Alphabet shares declined about four percent before the market opened, while Tesla shares dropped more than five percent. Investors reacted cautiously after both technology companies announced plans for significantly higher spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Both companies reported negative free cash flow during the second quarter despite posting solid revenue growth across important business segments. Consequently, investors focused more on future investment commitments than on several positive financial results.
Alphabet increased its capital expenditure forecast for this year to between $195 billion and $205 billion. Previously, the company expected annual capital spending to range between $180 billion and $190 billion.
Company executives also warned that investment levels could continue increasing during 2027 as demand for artificial intelligence expands. According to management, additional computing capacity remains necessary to support customers using AI-powered services and cloud products.
Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai explained that the higher spending primarily reflects faster deployment of infrastructure supporting growing demand. Therefore, the company continues expanding its computing resources to keep pace with rapid adoption of artificial intelligence technologies.
Meanwhile, Tesla also reported a substantial increase in capital investment during the second quarter of the year. The electric vehicle manufacturer said capital expenditures climbed 142 percent compared with the same period last year, reaching $5.79 billion.
Tesla expects total capital spending to exceed $25 billion throughout the current financial year as development projects continue. Management believes these investments will strengthen future growth across several advanced technology initiatives beyond electric vehicles.
Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk expressed confidence that the company’s current investments will generate strong long-term financial returns. He stated that the business continues investing aggressively because management expects these projects to deliver significant future value.
Tesla highlighted several strategic priorities receiving additional funding, including semiconductor development and the Optimus humanoid robot program. Furthermore, executives confirmed that first-generation production lines for Optimus are currently being installed before manufacturing begins.
Although higher spending pressured investor confidence, both companies also delivered encouraging operational results during the reporting period. Those achievements demonstrated continued demand across important business divisions despite concerns surrounding increasing capital requirements.
Google Cloud generated particularly strong performance after quarterly revenue increased 82 percent compared with the previous year’s results. Revenue reached $24.8 billion, exceeding many market expectations and highlighting continued customer demand for cloud computing services.
Tesla also reported healthy growth within its automotive business despite broader investor concerns surrounding capital expenditure increases. Automotive revenue reached $20.52 billion during the quarter, representing a 23 percent increase from the same period last year.
Even with those positive financial results, markets concentrated primarily on the scale of future investment commitments announced by both companies. Investors continue carefully evaluating whether current spending levels will generate sufficient returns as artificial intelligence competition intensifies.
AI Spending remains a central priority for major technology companies seeking leadership in rapidly expanding digital markets. As businesses accelerate infrastructure investments, shareholders will closely monitor financial performance, profitability, and long-term returns from these ambitious artificial intelligence strategies.
