Following a recent deadly shooting at Florida State University, student survivors are urging state lawmakers to maintain current gun safety measures, specifically a law that raised the minimum age to purchase firearms from 18 to 21.
The students traveled to the state Capitol just days after a gunman opened fire on the university’s campus in Tallahassee, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to six others. The incident occurred near the end of the legislative session, prompting renewed calls for action on gun safety.
Among those speaking out was 20-year-old student Andres Perez, who shared his experience of being locked in a classroom during the incident. “When I transferred to Florida State University last fall, I never imagined I’d be sending what could have been final messages to my family,” said Perez, who leads a campus-based student advocacy group.
Perez and others urged lawmakers not to reverse the age requirement law enacted after the 2018 Parkland school shooting, arguing that such protections are essential to preventing future tragedies. They emphasized that efforts to reduce gun violence should continue in honor of victims not only from the recent event but across the state and the country.
