Marco Rubio Announces Diplomatic Overhaul and Workforce Reduction

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced a wide-reaching reorganization of the State Department, including a proposed 15% reduction in domestic staffing and the closure or consolidation of over 100 international offices.

The plan, which was shared publicly by Rubio and outlined in internal documents, reflects broader efforts by the administration to reshape U.S. foreign policy operations and reduce the overall size of the federal government. A key factor in the restructuring is the integration of functions from the U.S. Agency for International Development, which has been undergoing a phased transition under federal efficiency initiatives.

In a message to department employees, Rubio stated that the changes aim to streamline operations and modernize the agency’s approach to diplomacy. “We must align our structure to better address the challenges of the 21st century,” he said, adding that the changes support a national focus on strategic priorities.

A spokesperson for the department emphasized that while the overhaul is extensive, it is designed to enhance the capabilities of the diplomatic workforce without resulting in immediate layoffs. The goal, according to officials, is to create a leaner and more agile department better equipped for current global demands.
