It must be a day ending in “y” because once again, a Windows 11 update is causing serious issues for users. Microsoft has had to step in to mitigate the effects of a faulty update using its Known Issue Rollback (KIR) system.
The culprit this time is the KB5055523 update, released earlier in April. After installation, many users reported encountering Blue Screens of Death (BSoDs) along with an error code 0x18B, indicating a SECURE_KERNEL_ERROR. A similar problem is linked to the KB5053656 preview update from March.
While the March preview update was optional and only installed by users who manually sought it out, the April KB5055523 update was a mandatory cumulative update that included security fixes meaning it was automatically installed on most Windows 11 systems.
In its advisory, Microsoft acknowledges the issue and confirms that it is using KIR to roll back the problematic parts of the update. However, this process isn’t instant. The rollback can take up to 24 hours to reach most consumer and unmanaged business devices. Microsoft recommends restarting your PC to help the fix apply more quickly.
But this automatic mitigation doesn’t help everyone. For enterprise-managed systems, the fix must be applied manually by IT administrators using a downloadable Group Policy configuration file.
This incident is yet another example of the growing reliance on KIR—a tool once used sparingly but now becoming a frequent fallback as update reliability continues to slip.
