Two Men Charged in Connection with College Basketball Player Death Case
Authorities have charged two men in connection with the January shooting death of a 20-year-old college basketball player in Tennessee. Law enforcement officials arrested the suspects months after the fatal incident following an extended investigation. Additionally, prosecutors say the case involves multiple violent crime charges, including first-degree murder. Meanwhile, investigators continue reviewing digital evidence and witness statements linked to the case.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department identified the suspects as Brayden Carter, 19, and Damarion Coleman, 18. Officers arrested both individuals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, after coordinated enforcement actions. Furthermore, Carter faces charges including first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and multiple firearm-related offenses. Coleman faces similar charges, and authorities are processing his case in juvenile court due to his age at the time of the incident.
Investigators say officers arrested Carter during a vehicle stop after he left his residence in Murfreesboro. Police also recovered a firearm from the vehicle during the arrest operation. In a separate action, SWAT officers detained Coleman at his home in the same city. Authorities then transported both suspects into custody for processing and charging procedures.
The victim, Andre Bell, was a sophomore at Fisk University studying business administration. He also played for the university’s basketball team and maintained student-athlete status at the time of his death. Additionally, officials confirmed that Bell died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center on January 12 following the shooting incident. He was originally from Jackson, Tennessee.
According to investigators, Bell was with two friends at a gymnastics event at the Nashville fairgrounds before the shooting. After the event, the group traveled in a vehicle toward campus when another car approached them. Police report that occupants in Bell’s vehicle observed a dark sedan pulling alongside them before gunfire erupted. Subsequently, Bell suffered fatal injuries during the shooting.
Detectives leading the investigation reviewed cellphone data and other digital evidence during the case. Authorities allege that the motive involved jealousy connected to personal relationships. Police state that Carter’s girlfriend participated in a gymnastics team and attended the same event. Investigators further allege that Carter disapproved of interactions between other young men and his girlfriend.
Law enforcement officials also state that both suspects were present at the fairgrounds on the night of the incident. Additionally, investigators allege they targeted Bell and two teammates with intent to intimidate them. Authorities say the goal involved influencing future interactions through threats of violence. Meanwhile, prosecutors continue presenting evidence as the case proceeds through the court system.
Officials confirmed that Carter remains held under a bond set at $250,000 pending further proceedings. Coleman remains detained as his case moves through juvenile court review. Furthermore, prosecutors continue coordinating filings and court appearances related to the charges. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities finalize additional evidentiary reviews.
