U.S. Bills Target China’s Influence: Potential Crackdown

Proposed legislative actions in the U.S. could significantly restrict a foreign power’s activities across various sectors if passed. These measures target the acquisition of domestic agricultural land, predatory investment practices, and connections to American educational institutions.

One set of bills aims to prevent collaborative research between U.S. universities and those connected to the military of the aforementioned foreign power, as well as to withhold federal funding from institutions that partner with entities linked to it.

Another legislative proposal focuses on monitoring and countering the foreign power’s lending practices, specifically those deemed economically coercive. This would involve establishing dedicated personnel at global diplomatic missions to track investments in critical infrastructure.

A third bill would introduce oversight into purchases of U.S. agricultural land that could potentially compromise national security. This measure would prohibit federal assistance for certain real estate holdings owned by foreign entities and strengthen disclosure requirements for all land acquisitions by such entities.

These proposed restrictions on the foreign power’s influence follow its recent multilateral discussions with other nations on nuclear-related matters.

Prior to the meeting, a spokesperson from one of the participating nations indicated that the discussions would center on nuclear developments and the lifting of economic restrictions.

A former U.S. executive branch official suggested that these discussions might involve topics beyond nuclear issues, such as potential de-escalation of nuclear weapons.
