The Supreme Court has allowed construction of the White House ballroom to continue while a legal challenge moves forward. The 5-4 decision gives President Donald Trump a significant legal victory over opponents challenging the project.
The ruling prevents a lower court order from immediately stopping construction at the White House. However, the justices did not make a final ruling on whether the ballroom project itself complies with federal law.
The planned ballroom covers approximately 90,000 square feet and carries an estimated price of $400 million. Construction follows the demolition of the White House East Wing to create space for the new facility.
The Supreme Court majority focused on whether the preservation group challenging the project had sufficient legal standing. The justices concluded that the group was unlikely to demonstrate the type of legal injury required to bring the lawsuit.
Meanwhile, Chief Justice John Roberts joined the court’s three liberal justices in dissenting from the decision. They argued that the construction could be unlawful because Congress had not specifically approved the project.
The dispute centers on presidential authority over changes to the White House and other federal property. Opponents argue that major alterations require congressional involvement, while the administration maintains that construction can proceed under presidential authority.
The Trump administration had appealed after lower courts imposed restrictions on above-ground construction. Those courts had questioned whether the administration could move forward without additional congressional approval.
The Supreme Court’s decision now allows construction crews to continue their work while the broader legal dispute remains unresolved. Consequently, workers can proceed with the project even though courts could still consider additional challenges.
The ballroom project has attracted considerable attention because of its size, cost and effect on the historic White House complex. Trump has promoted the facility as a major addition for official events and large gatherings.
Construction crews have continued working on the project as the administration seeks to maintain its schedule. The administration has also argued that the broader project includes important security and operational features.
However, the Supreme Court’s latest decision does not permanently settle the dispute. The legal challenge can continue, and the case could return to the justices if further proceedings create new issues.
For now, the ruling removes an immediate legal obstacle and allows the Trump ballroom project to advance. The decision also keeps broader questions about presidential authority and congressional oversight at the center of the dispute.
