Socialist influence has become a central theme in Colorado Republican gubernatorial nominee Victor Marx’s campaign. Marx, a former Marine, argues that progressive candidates have gained momentum across Colorado and elsewhere. He says his campaign offers voters a more disciplined alternative focused on public safety and government accountability. Furthermore, Marx has selected retired Marine Col. George Markert as his running mate.
Marx won the Republican gubernatorial nomination during Colorado’s June primary election. He campaigned on concerns involving crime, social policy, government spending, and household costs. Meanwhile, Democratic socialist candidates have also gained attention through several recent primary victories around the country. Marx argues that those electoral results demonstrate a broader ideological shift within Democratic politics. He describes socialism as a pathway toward communism and says voters should recognize what he considers its long-term consequences. However, his campaign focuses primarily on Colorado issues, including crime, spending, public safety, and political accountability.
The Republican nominee has emphasized his military background throughout the campaign. Additionally, he selected Markert, a retired Marine colonel with more than three decades of military experience. Markert held senior assignments involving U.S. Central Command and Marine logistics organizations during his military career.
Marx says the two veterans bring discipline, leadership, and personal accountability to the Republican ticket. He also presents their military experience as an important contrast with what he views as ineffective government leadership. Consequently, the campaign has made military service a significant part of its political identity.
Marx has also criticized the Democratic Socialists of America for its role in Colorado politics. He argues that the organization has become increasingly influential and seeks major changes to government institutions. The DSA endorsed Kiros during her successful congressional primary campaign earlier this year.
Public safety represents another major component of Marx’s campaign message. He points to Colorado crime statistics while arguing that state leaders have failed to adequately address residents’ concerns. According to federal crime data cited in the campaign discussion, Colorado reported violent and property crime rates above national levels during 2024.
Marx has directed much of his criticism toward Democratic gubernatorial nominee Phil Weiser. Weiser currently serves as Colorado’s attorney general and has frequently challenged policies from the Trump administration through federal litigation. Marx argues that Weiser represents a continuation of Democratic leadership that has failed to improve public safety.
The Republican nominee also contends that Colorado residents face rising costs while receiving inadequate government services. He says taxpayers deserve stronger results from state institutions and more effective management of public resources. Therefore, his campaign intends to connect economic concerns with broader arguments about government performance.
At the same time, Marx has framed the gubernatorial contest as a choice between his Republican ticket and Democratic leadership. He argues that progressive organizations have gained influence through Democratic candidates rather than through independent political movements.
Socialist influence will likely remain a major issue for Republicans throughout the campaign. Meanwhile, Democrats are expected to emphasize their own priorities involving government services, economic policy, and statewide leadership.
The November election will ultimately determine whether Colorado voters embrace Marx’s military-centered conservative platform. It will also test whether Democratic candidates can maintain support amid growing debates over progressive political influence.
