Pentagon Reportedly Planning to Cut Civilian Workforce by at Least 50,000

The Pentagon is reportedly planning to reduce its civilian workforce by approximately 50,000 to 60,000 employees. The cuts, which represent a 5% to 8% reduction, are expected to be achieved through hiring freezes, the dismissal of probationary workers with less than one or two years of service, and voluntary resignations. Employees who choose to resign will reportedly receive full pay until the end of September.

A senior defense official stated that the reduction, while significant in number, is not drastic in percentage terms and can be implemented without negatively impacting military readiness. The official emphasized that the goal is to ensure resources are allocated effectively.

The reported cuts come amid ongoing efforts to streamline operations and reallocate funding within the Department of Defense. However, the plan has yet to be officially confirmed, and details remain subject to change.

In other news, the US National Archives and Records Administration has released approximately 2,200 files, consisting of over 63,000 pages, related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The documents, which were previously classified, were posted online as part of a long-standing effort to make government records on the assassination publicly available.

While the release has generated significant interest, early reviews suggest that the documents contain no major revelations. Much of the material is difficult to read and interpret, with historians noting that the release is more complex and less annotated than previous document dumps. The files do not appear to challenge the widely accepted conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in assassinating Kennedy.
