The Oklahoma Runoff Election became the central focus of the state’s gubernatorial contest after Republican voters selected two finalists. Former state Senator Mike Mazzei and Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond advanced to the runoff election scheduled for August 25.
The race will determine the Republican nominee to succeed Governor Kevin Stitt, who cannot seek another term because of term limits. Several candidates competed in the primary, including businessman Chip Keating and former Oklahoma House Speaker Charles McCall.
Earlier in the campaign, President Donald Trump endorsed Mazzei and described him as a supporter of his political agenda. The endorsement arrived during an already competitive contest and added further attention to the race.
Before the primary concluded, Mazzei, Drummond, Keating, and McCall remained among the leading candidates. However, voters ultimately selected Mazzei and Drummond to continue to the next stage of the election process.
The Oklahoma Runoff Election follows a campaign centered on taxes, public safety, government spending, and economic policy. Throughout the race, candidates outlined differing approaches to addressing state priorities and future governance.
Mazzei has promoted proposals that include eliminating property taxes and reducing government waste. Additionally, he has supported policies related to literacy improvement and restrictions on foreign ownership of state land.
His campaign also highlighted previous government experience. During Governor Stitt’s administration, Mazzei served as state budget director for part of the governor’s term.
Meanwhile, some political opponents questioned Mazzei’s decision to work with longtime political consultant Roger Stone. In response, Mazzei stated that Stone was one of several advisers involved in the campaign and noted the value of receiving perspectives on federal political developments.
Drummond based much of his campaign on his record as Oklahoma attorney general. Furthermore, he emphasized public safety issues, immigration enforcement efforts, military service, and legal challenges involving federal government policies.
His campaign materials also highlighted his service as a fighter pilot during the Gulf War. According to campaign statements, Drummond received military recognition for actions performed during combat operations.
McCall focused his campaign on fiscal policy, leadership experience, and conservative economic proposals. Among his priorities, he advocated eliminating both state income taxes and property taxes while emphasizing legislative experience.
Keating, who previously served in the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, highlighted his law enforcement background. Additionally, he promoted a platform focused on public safety, border security, and efforts targeting criminal activity.
The Oklahoma Runoff Election will now provide Republican voters with a direct choice between Mazzei and Drummond. As campaigning continues, both candidates are expected to focus on their records, policy priorities, and visions for Oklahoma’s future leadership.
Voters will make their final decision during the August runoff. The winner will secure the Republican nomination and advance to the general election to compete for the governor’s office.
