Throughout her political career, Granger achieved several historic milestones at both the local and national levels. She became the first woman elected mayor of Fort Worth, Texas, before later winning election to the United States House of Representatives.
In addition, she became the first Republican woman to chair the influential House Appropriations Committee. That leadership position placed her at the center of major decisions involving federal government spending and budget priorities.
Granger first won election to Congress in 1996 and represented her Texas district for almost thirty years. During that time, she developed a reputation for focusing on defense funding, infrastructure, and economic development projects benefiting her state.
Before entering politics, Granger built careers in both education and business. She graduated from Texas Wesleyan University in 1965 and initially pursued teaching instead of fashion design, which had also interested her during college.
She spent nine years teaching English literature and journalism within the Birdville Independent School District. Later, changing personal circumstances encouraged her to pursue a different professional path in the insurance industry.
Granger successfully established and managed her own insurance business for more than two decades. Meanwhile, she balanced her professional responsibilities while raising her family with support from close relatives.

She strongly supported production of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in Fort Worth because of its economic importance. Furthermore, she consistently advocated for projects supporting jobs and manufacturing across her congressional district.
When Republicans gained control of the House in 2023, Granger became chair of the House Appropriations Committee. In that role, she worked on federal spending legislation while supporting efforts to reduce selected government expenditures.
Granger announced that she would not seek reelection in 2024 as health concerns increasingly affected her ability to travel. She later explained that frequent trips to Washington had become difficult because of ongoing medical challenges.
