Florida Mother Arrested After House Fire and Child Abuse Allegations

Florida authorities arrested a Miami mother after investigators linked her to a house fire and alleged child abuse.

Police arrested Meliza Campos-Sanchez, 26, on August 17 following an investigation into a kitchen fire. The charges include first-degree arson, child abuse, and two counts of child neglect.

The investigation began after firefighters responded to the Miami residence on August 16. Investigators later determined that someone intentionally started the fire inside the kitchen.

According to investigators, the fire involved an open flame, flammable liquids, and combustible materials. Authorities also found evidence of burning around the center of the tiled kitchen floor.

The investigation then expanded after authorities discovered videos allegedly posted by Campos-Sanchez online. Those recordings reportedly showed several incidents involving her two young daughters.

One video allegedly showed Campos-Sanchez melting candle wax and applying it to herself. Investigators said the footage also showed her placing the hot wax onto her daughters’ hands.

Another recording allegedly showed Campos-Sanchez wearing a metallic-colored mask inside the kitchen. Authorities said she sprayed a liquid onto clothing before setting the material on fire.

Investigators later documented several items inside the residence that they considered relevant to the fire investigation. Those items reportedly included a lighter, a mask, and a bottle containing a clear liquid.

Authorities identified the liquid as a substance believed to be rubbing alcohol. Investigators also photographed burned materials and limited damage across the kitchen floor.

The children’s father, Yusniel Cue, reportedly told investigators that he and Campos-Sanchez had experienced marital problems. He said he had stayed with his parents for approximately one week before the incident.

During that period, Campos-Sanchez reportedly remained at the residence with their daughters. Cue later learned about the videos after receiving a call from one of her friends.

He then contacted authorities and went to the family home. Deputies and firefighters had already arrived when he reached the residence, according to investigators.

Cue subsequently took custody of the children while authorities transported Campos-Sanchez to a hospital. Investigators later attempted to speak with her about the allegations.

At that time, authorities said Campos-Sanchez remained sedated and could not participate in an interview. Police subsequently continued their investigation using physical evidence and witness statements.

Investigators also spoke with the couple’s older daughter about what happened inside the home. She reportedly described seeing her mother ignite clothing on the kitchen floor.

The girl said she and her younger sister were inside a nearby laundry room. She reportedly watched their mother set the clothing on fire and throw a glass mug onto the floor.

According to the investigation, Campos-Sanchez then used water to extinguish the flames. However, authorities later determined that the kitchen fire had involved intentional ignition.

The older daughter also described an incident involving candles and melted wax. She told investigators that her mother later brought both children into the kitchen.

The daughter reportedly said Campos-Sanchez applied hot wax to herself and both girls. Authorities included those allegations in the child abuse investigation.

The case has therefore involved several separate allegations involving the children and the household fire. Investigators have relied on the videos, physical evidence, and statements from family members.

The charges represent allegations, and Campos-Sanchez remains entitled to due process as the case moves forward. Authorities will continue determining the circumstances surrounding the reported incidents and the children’s safety.

The Florida investigation highlights the serious consequences associated with intentionally setting fires inside occupied homes. Furthermore, the presence of children can lead authorities to pursue additional charges when investigators identify potential risks.

The alleged conduct involving the children also prompted separate child abuse and neglect charges. Those allegations remain part of the ongoing criminal case.

For now, Campos-Sanchez faces multiple charges connected to the Miami residence and the reported treatment of her daughters. The investigation could provide additional information as authorities continue reviewing evidence and pursuing the case.
