Authorities in Charlotte, North Carolina, reported a deadly incident on Interstate 77 after a stolen vehicle pursuit ended in tragedy. A person died after being struck by a passing vehicle following a crash involving the stolen car. Police said the sequence of events began late Sunday night near Nations Ford Road.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police stated they first identified a vehicle reported stolen from the Old Pineville Road area. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver refused to pull over. As the situation developed, officers decided to disengage their lights and sirens while continuing to monitor the vehicle from a distance.
An off-duty officer later spotted the same stolen car and began following it cautiously. Shortly afterward, the officer witnessed the vehicle crash along I-77. The crash immediately triggered a chaotic scene as the occupants tried to escape on foot.
Police said two individuals exited the wrecked vehicle and ran from the crash site. Officers quickly detained one of the suspects nearby after a brief pursuit. However, the second person ran across multiple lanes of traffic toward the southbound side of the interstate.
While attempting to cross the busy highway, the fleeing individual entered active traffic lanes. A passing driver struck the person before they could reach the other side safely. Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted life-saving measures at the scene.
Despite their efforts, authorities confirmed the injured person died as a result of the collision. Officials stated the driver who struck the pedestrian stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Police also conducted screening procedures as part of the standard investigation.
Detectives from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to assist with the case. They worked together to collect evidence, review traffic conditions, and reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the fatal moment.
