Best states rankings have once again placed Utah at the top of the national standings for 2026. The latest results highlight strong performances across multiple categories, while Texas earned the highest economy ranking. Meanwhile, several Midwest and Mountain West states posted significant gains, reflecting changing economic and population trends across the United States.
Utah retained the highest overall position in the latest Best states rankings for the fourth consecutive year. The state’s consistent performance across several categories helped preserve its leading position. Additionally, Utah continued posting strong results in economic growth, fiscal stability, infrastructure, and education.
The latest rankings also highlighted changing regional trends across the United States. Several Mountain West, Midwest, and Sun Belt states improved their overall positions. Consequently, those regions continued attracting businesses, workers, and new residents seeking affordable opportunities.
South Dakota recorded one of the largest improvements in this year’s rankings. The state climbed from eighth place to second overall through stronger performances across multiple categories. Likewise, North Dakota advanced from twelfth position to fourth overall during the latest evaluation.
Minnesota secured the third overall position, while Nebraska completed the top five rankings. New Hampshire, Idaho, Florida, Washington, and Vermont rounded out the remaining top ten positions. Together, those states demonstrated balanced performance across several measured categories.
Texas achieved the nation’s highest ranking for overall economic performance during the latest evaluation. Strong job growth contributed significantly to the state’s leading economic position. Furthermore, Texas posted impressive results for gross domestic product growth and continued population gains.
The report also credited Texas with sustained migration from other parts of the country. Additionally, strong youth population growth supported continued workforce expansion and long-term economic development. Those factors helped strengthen Texas across several economic measurements.
Analysts pointed to broader shifts affecting regional economic performance across the country. Many businesses continue relocating operations toward lower-cost regions with expanding workforces. Consequently, several Midwestern and Southern states gained momentum during the latest rankings.
Experts also noted that affordability continues influencing relocation decisions for businesses and families. Lower living costs often attract skilled workers seeking greater economic opportunities. Therefore, several traditionally overlooked states continued climbing the national standings.
Utah maintained its leadership by performing well across five major ranking categories. The state ranked near the top for economic strength, fiscal stability, infrastructure, and education. Moreover, its young workforce continued supporting long-term economic growth and development.
One notable finding showed that no single category determined the overall rankings. For example, Utah ranked much lower in natural environment despite leading the national standings. That outcome demonstrated the importance of balanced performance across several evaluation areas.
Other states also achieved first-place finishes within individual categories during the assessment. Colorado led education, while Hawaii ranked highest for healthcare and natural environment. Nevada topped infrastructure, Wyoming led fiscal stability, and Vermont ranked first for opportunity.
Among the nation’s largest states, Florida remained the only one finishing inside the overall top ten. Texas combined its leading economy with continued employment and population growth throughout the evaluation period. Meanwhile, California and New York finished outside the top ten overall rankings.
The Best states rankings evaluated every state across eight major performance categories. Those categories included the economy, education, healthcare, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Together, those measurements created a broad comparison of overall statewide performance.
