An American missionary who had been held in Tunisia for more than a year was released on Sunday and has now returned to the United States with his family.
U.S. officials confirmed that Robert Vieira, a U.S. citizen, was freed following extended diplomatic efforts. Vieira had been in Tunisia conducting missionary work when he was detained by local authorities 13 months ago.
Although details surrounding his arrest remain limited, Tunisian officials reportedly suspected him of espionage. His release came after sustained negotiations involving U.S. special envoy Adam Boehler, who worked closely with Tunisia’s foreign minister, Mohamed Ali Nafti.
“We are grateful to the Tunisian government for resolving this matter and permitting Mr. Vieira to reunite with his loved ones after over a year in pre-trial detention,” Boehler said following the release.
The North African country, located between Algeria and Libya, ultimately agreed to release Vieira after diplomatic outreach and collaboration between U.S. and Tunisian officials. Boehler credited the successful outcome to strong communication with Tunisia’s leadership.
