The Albania resort probe has intensified after anti-corruption prosecutors launched an investigation into environmental changes tied to a major luxury tourism project linked to Jared Kushner. The development proposal has sparked growing public concern, while environmental groups and residents continue challenging the project’s impact on a protected coastal area.
Prosecutors in Albania are examining decisions that altered the protected status of a coastal wetland near the village of Zvërnec. Authorities opened the investigation to determine whether officials followed legal procedures when approving changes affecting the environmentally sensitive landscape.
The wetland supports a diverse ecosystem that includes flamingos, Mediterranean monk seals, and important sea turtle nesting grounds. Consequently, environmental organizations have raised concerns about potential damage to wildlife habitats if large-scale construction moves forward.
Meanwhile, Kushner’s investment firm previously announced plans to pursue luxury tourism developments in Albania. The proposed project near Zvërnec would include approximately 10,000 hotel rooms and villas, creating one of the country’s largest tourism ventures.
Earlier this year, Kushner and his wife, Ivanka Trump, visited the area as discussions regarding the project continued. At the same time, government officials maintained negotiations with developers while promoting investment opportunities aimed at expanding Albania’s tourism sector.
Prime Minister Edi Rama defended the proposal, arguing that the development could strengthen Albania’s position as a leading regional destination. Furthermore, he described the project as part of a broader strategy designed to attract international visitors and increase economic growth.
However, opposition to the development continued growing throughout recent weeks. In May, contractors erected large fences topped with barbed wire around sections of the proposed site. As a result, residents and tourists lost access to parts of the beach, prompting widespread criticism.
Shortly afterward, nonprofit organizations and community activists organized demonstrations demanding that authorities halt the project. Protesters also called for greater transparency regarding government decisions connected to the development.
The Albania resort probe gained additional attention following a major protest held outside government offices on Sunday. Demonstrators gathered to oppose the project and express frustration with national leadership.
Following the protest, videos circulated online showing private security personnel confronting demonstrators near the construction area. The footage appeared to show guards dragging one protester across rocky terrain, while several witnesses reported additional threats during attempts to remove fencing.
Authorities responded quickly after the incident. Officials revoked the licenses of two private security companies connected to the confrontation. Additionally, authorities charged roughly fifteen protesters and removed the local police chief from active duties.
As investigations continue, the Albania resort probe remains at the center of a growing debate involving environmental protection, tourism development, public access, and government accountability. Both supporters and critics now await further findings as prosecutors continue reviewing decisions surrounding the controversial coastal project.
