A Mississippi family is mourning a heartbreaking tragedy after six-year-old Gracelynn Vick vanished while playing outside her home. Hours later, authorities discovered her inside a barrel near the property. Her sudden death shocked her loved ones and the entire Saucier community.
Gracelynn had gone outside to play around noon. Her mother, Vicki Hutcherson, noticed her missing shortly after and began searching. As the panic set in, she called for help. Family, police, and neighbors quickly joined the search.
Emergency crews and K9 units scoured the area for hours. By the evening, a Mississippi task force officer made the grim discovery. Gracelynn had crawled inside a barrel and become trapped. Despite immediate efforts, she had already died.
Authorities later described the incident as a tragic accident that took a young life. The sheriff explained that Gracelynn likely became stuck inside the barrel, where she faced intense heat and limited oxygen. Experts compared the situation to being locked inside a hot car.
Gracelynn’s aunt, Jackie Polk, remembers her as bright, fearless, and full of life. She loved climbing trees, playing in mud, and exploring the outdoors. “You could give her rocks and sticks and she’d be thrilled,” Polk said.
Her death follows years of sorrow for Hutcherson. In recent years, she lost two other children and her fiancé. Gracelynn’s brother Larry passed away from a rare condition. Her sister Victoria died in a car crash last year. Their mother’s fiancé also died from cancer shortly after.
“This family has suffered so much,” Polk shared. “We’ve attended more funerals in four years than we ever imagined.”
A candlelight vigil was held at Saucier Park to honor Gracelynn. Around 150 people gathered, including family, friends, and first responders. Local nonprofit Kind Hearts Organization helped raise money for her funeral. The group also plans to plant a pink-flowering tree and install a memory bench at Gracelynn’s school.
The organization’s founder said the community felt called to act. “We didn’t know what to do, but we had to do something,” she explained.
