The Etched valuation has reached $21 billion after the AI hardware startup secured another $700 million in fresh funding.
Jane Street led the latest investment after testing Etched’s technology and purchasing its AI hardware for internal use. Consequently, the company has experienced an unusually rapid increase in its market value.
Etched previously carried a $5 billion valuation in December, showing how quickly investor expectations have changed. In July, the company raised $300 million through another funding round at a $10.3 billion valuation.
Now, investors have pushed the company’s valuation to $21 billion, effectively doubling its value within roughly one month. The latest increase adds nearly $11 billion to the company’s valuation following its previous financing.

AI inference occurs after users submit prompts and requires specialized computing resources to generate responses. According to the company, inference involves two primary stages that require different types of hardware optimization.
The first stage involves processing the incoming prompt and understanding its surrounding context. This stage requires substantial computing power because the system must analyze large amounts of information.
The second stage generates the response and relies heavily on memory performance. Therefore, improving both stages can potentially increase output speeds while reducing infrastructure costs.
Etched has developed separate technologies intended to address these different requirements. One component focuses on the initial processing stage and uses lower electrical voltage to support greater transistor density.
That design allows the company to increase processing capacity while limiting some of the heat challenges associated with powerful AI chips. As a result, Etched says its hardware can process more tokens at higher speeds.
The company has also developed a memory system and connection technology for the response-generation stage. Etched calls this technology cluster-scale memory because multiple chips can access a shared memory pool.
Furthermore, the system aims to connect those chips with extremely low communication delays. The company believes that approach can improve performance while lowering costs for demanding AI workloads.
Etched has also worked to correct an earlier misunderstanding surrounding its hardware strategy. Some observers initially believed the company designed each chip around one specific advanced AI model.
However, the company says its systems can now support any frontier model rather than targeting only one model. That broader compatibility could make the technology more useful as AI models continue evolving.
Jane Street’s involvement also provides an important commercial signal for the startup. The investment firm tested Etched’s hardware before committing additional capital to the company.
The firm also operates an Etched rack inside its data center, indicating practical interest beyond financial investment. Consequently, the relationship could provide Etched with valuable feedback from demanding computing workloads.
Several major investment firms and technology-focused investors have also backed Etched. Their participation reflects continued interest in specialized AI infrastructure as companies expand their computing requirements.
