XRP volatility could increase sharply as traders await new U.S. inflation figures and maintain unusually large futures positions.
The cryptocurrency currently trades close to the psychologically important $1 level after recent weakness across digital asset markets. Meanwhile, futures activity has climbed significantly, suggesting traders have increased their exposure ahead of Wednesday’s economic data.
XRP briefly dropped below $1 during Tuesday trading before recovering toward approximately $1.02. However, that rebound has struggled to develop into stronger upward momentum as investors remain cautious.
The token has also underperformed several larger cryptocurrencies during the recent market recovery. Consequently, traders are paying closer attention to XRP’s price structure and growing derivatives exposure.
Open interest in XRP futures has increased substantially since the beginning of August. Current positions represent approximately 2.67 billion XRP, worth around $2.73 billion at recent market prices.
That figure compares with roughly 2.25 billion XRP at the start of the month. Therefore, the increase indicates that traders have added significant leveraged positions while XRP remains near a critical price level.
Higher leverage can amplify price movements when markets experience sudden changes. As a result, XRP could react more aggressively than other major cryptocurrencies following unexpected economic data.
The main catalyst involves the latest U.S. consumer inflation report. Investors expect July headline consumer prices to increase modestly from the previous month’s decline.
Forecasts call for monthly inflation growth of approximately 0.1% during July. Additionally, economists expect the annual inflation rate to ease slightly from June’s 3.5% reading.
Core inflation also remains important because it excludes food and energy prices. Current expectations suggest annual core inflation could decline from 2.6% to approximately 2.5%.
A hotter inflation reading could strengthen expectations for tighter Federal Reserve monetary policy. Consequently, higher interest-rate expectations could push Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar upward.
Those developments could create additional pressure across cryptocurrencies and other assets that investors consider sensitive to borrowing costs. Conversely, weaker inflation could reduce rate concerns and potentially improve sentiment toward digital assets.
XRP volatility therefore depends heavily on how traders interpret the inflation figures. However, the cryptocurrency also faces technical pressure because its price remains close to an important support area.
A sustained move below $1 could represent a significant technical development for XRP. Such a decline would mark the first sustained break beneath that level since late 2024.
If selling pressure increases, traders could begin watching lower support levels for signs of stabilization. The previous market structure around $0.92 represents one possible area where buyers could attempt another recovery.
A deeper decline could eventually bring attention toward the $0.50 region. However, such a move would require considerably stronger selling pressure than the market has experienced recently.
At the same time, elevated futures positioning creates the possibility of rapid moves in either direction. Traders holding leveraged positions could face forced liquidations if XRP moves sharply against their expectations.
That dynamic could increase short-term price swings even if the inflation report broadly matches forecasts. Therefore, investors may watch derivatives positioning alongside the actual economic data.
Bitcoin and other major cryptocurrencies also face potential volatility following the inflation release. Nevertheless, XRP’s combination of elevated futures exposure and nearby technical support creates additional sensitivity.
Market participants will therefore monitor the $1 level closely during the next trading sessions. A sustained recovery above recent highs could reduce immediate bearish pressure and improve short-term sentiment.
However, renewed selling below $1 could encourage traders to reassess their downside expectations. The resulting moves could become particularly sharp because of the significant leverage currently present.
XRP volatility ultimately depends on several factors rather than inflation alone. Economic data, interest-rate expectations, market liquidity, technical levels, and futures positioning could all influence its next major move.
For now, traders appear positioned for a potentially important reaction when the latest inflation figures reach financial markets. The combination of elevated leverage and uncertain monetary expectations leaves XRP particularly exposed to sudden price changes.
As the data arrives, traders will determine whether the cryptocurrency can defend its key support level. Alternatively, stronger inflation pressure could increase selling and push XRP toward lower technical support areas.
