A romance scam has led to a federal prison sentence after authorities uncovered a large online fraud scheme that tricked victims into sending hundreds of thousands of dollars. Investigators confirmed that the scheme involved fake identities, fabricated medical emergencies, and false investment platforms used to extract money from multiple victims.
Authorities said Kenny Osas Okuonghae received more than four years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. Additionally, the court ordered him to pay more than 1.2 million dollars in restitution to victims affected by the romance scam operation.
Furthermore, investigators reported that the fraud scheme ran for several years and targeted victims across multiple states. The operation included fake rental listings, impersonated professionals, and staged emotional relationships designed to build trust and encourage financial transfers.
Moreover, one victim believed he was helping a woman suffering from serious medical conditions. As a result, he sent more than 416,000 dollars after developing what he thought was a genuine online relationship.
In addition, prosecutors revealed that the fraudster created multiple fake identities, including doctors and military figures, to strengthen the deception. These fabricated personas supported the romance scam narrative and convinced victims to send additional payments.
Meanwhile, investigators uncovered that the funds moved through several bank accounts linked to business entities created by the defendant. These accounts processed millions of dollars over the duration of the scheme.
Furthermore, officials described a “pig butchering” method where scammers build emotional trust before encouraging large financial investments. This technique played a central role in the romance scam that targeted vulnerable individuals online.
Additionally, victims also lost money through fake cryptocurrency platforms that promised high investment returns. These platforms displayed fabricated profits while requiring additional payments for taxes and fees.
Consequently, financial institutions eventually flagged suspicious transactions and alerted authorities. Investigators then traced the funds and uncovered fraudulent invoices and false business records.
Ultimately, the court sentenced the defendant to prison and imposed supervised release following completion of the term. Officials emphasized that the romance scam highlights the growing threat of online financial fraud targeting unsuspecting victims.
