“Political Violence Must End”: Lawmakers Mourn Charlie Kirk’s Death

Political violence must end. That’s the message coming from both sides of the aisle after the shocking killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31. On Wednesday afternoon, Kirk was shot during a public appearance at Utah Valley University. The event was part of his “American Comeback Tour.” Police initially detained a suspect but later released them without charges. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging the public to call a hotline with any information.

Soon after news broke, what began as prayers for Kirk’s recovery turned into nationwide mourning. Tributes and strong condemnations of political violence poured in from Republicans and Democrats alike. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a close friend of Kirk, called the news “devastating.” He added, “This breaks my heart. Charlie championed conservative values with strength and clarity. I will miss him deeply.”

Furthermore, Johnson urged political leaders to denounce violence loudly and clearly. He warned, “Political violence must end. The human heart holds the problem, and we’ve lost control.” Similarly, Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, echoed that sentiment. “This is beyond terrible,” he said. “Charlie Kirk was a husband, father, and son. Violence is never the answer.”

Together, Gallego and his wife extended heartfelt prayers to the Kirk family. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune addressed the incident on the Senate floor. He was direct in his condemnation. “Political violence, which this attack appears to be, has no place in this country—none,” Thune declared.

President Donald Trump confirmed the death on Truth Social. “No one understood the heart of America’s youth better than Charlie,” he wrote. Trump, who survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 campaign, called for unity in the face of hate.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah called Kirk “an American patriot.” He condemned the shooting as a “cowardly act of violence.” According to Lee, the attack was not just on Kirk, but on civil debate and peaceful discourse. “The terrorists will not win. Charlie will,” he added.

Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, also spoke out. “We must find a way forward,” he said. “This level of political hate must stop.” The nation continues to reel from a rise in politically motivated attacks. In June, a gunman in Minnesota killed state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. Another state lawmaker was critically injured in the same incident.

Despite deep political divides, leaders appear united in their call to de-escalate. The violence, they say, threatens democracy itself. Political violence must end. That message now echoes across party lines, as America mourns another life lost.
