The United States says Hormuz mines have been removed from the main shipping lane, improving maritime access.
President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy had completed a major mine-clearing operation. The effort focused on the central shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. officials.
As a result, more commercial vessels could now travel through the strategic waterway. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important routes for international energy shipments. Therefore, restoring wider access could support the movement of oil toward global markets.
The operation reportedly followed several months of underwater surveillance and mine-removal efforts. U.S. Navy underwater drones scanned the shipping route while searching for objects suspected of being mines. Officials said the operation identified more than 100 objects that required further examination.
Meanwhile, private contractors worked with the military to remove or destroy suspected mines. The effort targeted the Traffic Separation Scheme, which serves as a central maritime route between Iran and Oman.
Previously, American forces relied heavily on a southern shipping route near Oman. That route allowed oil tankers to continue moving despite concerns surrounding the central passage. However, clearing the central route could allow vessels to travel in both directions.
Consequently, shipping companies could gain greater flexibility when moving through the strategically important waterway. U.S. officials said hundreds of vessels had already used the southern route recently. More than 500 ships reportedly traveled through that channel during the previous month.
Officials estimated that roughly 2% of those vessels faced attacks involving Iranian drones or missiles. Nevertheless, opening another shipping lane could reduce pressure on maritime traffic. It could also support increased oil exports from producers across the Gulf region.
Trump also warned that any future attempt to place mines would face an immediate response. He said the United States would maintain strict monitoring throughout international waters. Additionally, American space and naval forces will continue watching activity around the waterway.
The announcement came while Iranian and Omani officials discussed a separate framework for navigation. Their talks focused on creating a temporary corridor to support safer maritime movement. They also discussed longer-term arrangements covering traffic management and maritime security.
However, the discussions did not produce a final agreement during the latest meeting. Oman has expressed hope that both countries can establish temporary navigation arrangements soon.
At the same time, the American military continues enforcing restrictions affecting Iranian shipping activity. Therefore, the removal of the mines changes the strategic situation around the waterway. The development could also reduce Iran’s ability to use maritime threats as negotiating leverage.
Furthermore, improved access could provide greater stability for energy shipments leaving the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz carries significant volumes of global oil and energy supplies. Consequently, disruptions there can quickly affect shipping costs and international energy markets.
The clearing of the Hormuz mines therefore represents an important development for commercial shipping. Still, uncertainty remains because tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to influence maritime security.
Any new attempt to obstruct shipping could quickly increase risks around the waterway. For now, U.S. officials say the main shipping lane has regained broader operational access. The development gives oil tankers another route while American forces continue providing security support.
