U.S. President Donald Trump is set to sign executive orders on Tuesday aimed at revitalizing the country’s coal industry, according to individuals familiar with the matter.
Trump, who ran on a platform to boost U.S. energy production, has made efforts to reduce a number of energy and environmental regulations since assuming office. He is scheduled to sign the energy-focused orders at the White House at 3 p.m. (1900 GMT).
The orders are expected to direct the Interior and Energy Departments to implement measures that will benefit the coal sector. Among the actions outlined is a plan to support coal plants that are at risk of shutting down.
At the start of the century, coal accounted for over 50% of U.S. power generation, but its share has since declined to under 20%, as reported by the Energy Information Administration.
