Trump departed Turkey on the older presidential aircraft and arrived at RAF Mildenhall in England. The newer aircraft traveled separately to the military base before his arrival. After landing in the United Kingdom, Trump boarded the newer aircraft for the return flight to Washington.
The president explained the itinerary in a social media post. He said the newer aircraft had been sent to RAF Mildenhall so military personnel could tour the plane. Trump added that the visit honored a request from the base. He also said the adjustment required only a minimal change to the overall flight path.
Earlier that day, Trump announced the new aircraft would stop in the United Kingdom before returning home. He said the visit would allow service members to see the newest addition to the Air Force fleet. Trump added that he chose to fly the older Air Force One from Turkey “for old time’s sake.”
The newer Boeing 747 entered international service during Trump’s trip to Turkey. The aircraft is valued at about $400 million. The United States accepted it as a gift from the Qatari government last year. The decision previously drew criticism from some lawmakers over security concerns and possible conflicts of interest.
The aircraft change prompted questions during a news conference at the NATO summit in Ankara. One reporter asked whether the decision reflected security concerns related to Iran. The question referred to Trump’s earlier comments that Iran had allegedly targeted him.
Trump did not directly answer the question about the aircraft. Instead, he discussed the security risks faced by U.S. presidents. He said the office carries significant dangers. He also repeated his belief that Iran considers him a target.
Another reporter later asked why he was not returning on the newer aircraft. Trump replied that it was visiting major military bases in Europe. He said service members would have an opportunity to see the aircraft before it returned to the United States. He described it as an impressive addition to the presidential fleet.
