Eighteen-year-old tennis star Braun Levi died after a suspected drunk driver struck him in Manhattan Beach. The crash happened at around 1 a.m. on Sepulveda Boulevard. Officers arrived and found Levi lying in the street next to a car. Emergency crews rushed him to the hospital, but doctors could not save him. The Manhattan Beach Police Departmentconfirmed the young athlete’s death shortly after.
Levi had been a four-year varsity starter on Loyola High School’s tennis team. Just weeks earlier, he had secured his fourth consecutive league championship. His school’s athletic department shared a heartfelt tribute on Facebook. They described Levi as a true leader, known for his bright energy and infectious smile. “He was a beloved member of the Loyola community,” the post read, “always lifting up those around him.”
The tragedy deepened when details about the family’s past emerged. Earlier this year, the Palisades Fire destroyed the Levi family’s home. They had recently relocated to the South Bay to rebuild. Despite facing personal loss, Levi had remained committed to helping others. According to Jamal Adams, the incoming principal of Loyola High, Levi created a peer-to-peer counseling space for displaced students. He also helped organize a student retreat to support classmates affected by the wildfires.
“Braun always thought about others, even when dealing with his own pain,” Adams said. His dedication touched many within the school and the wider community.
Levi had been preparing to graduate this June. He planned to attend the University of Virginia that fall. His classmates, teachers, and family had looked forward to celebrating his achievements. At a recent prayer vigil, Assistant Principal Paul Jordan spoke about Levi’s lasting impact. “He was a friend and an inspiration,” Jordan said. “He loved his family, his school, and his community.”
Police arrested Jenia Belt, 33, at the scene of the crash. Authorities charged her with driving under the influence and murder. As of now, it remains unclear if she has entered a plea or secured legal counsel.
Braun Levi’s death has sparked widespread grief and outrage. Across social media and in local vigils, people have mourned the loss of a gifted athlete and a compassionate leader. His story reminds many of the devastating toll drunk driving takes on families and communities.
