The official legal fund for Luigi Mangione has now raised over $1 million in donations. The December 4 Legal Committee announced the milestone in a recent press release. Mangione’s defense fund gained traction steadily over nearly five months.
Donations came from more than 28,000 supporters on the GiveSendGo platform. The median contribution was $20, reflecting strong grassroots backing. However, some donors gave large sums that pushed the total higher. One mystery supporter gave $36,500 in March 2025. That donor cited the “widespread support” for Mangione as their reason.
“Luigi Mangione defense fund” has become a rallying cry among his supporters. Many have continued to spread awareness online and offline. Several donors contributed over $20,000, making the campaign’s success possible. Organizers stated the fund would go toward legal costs for all three of Mangione’s criminal cases.
Mangione, 27, remains held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Authorities charged him in connection with the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The incident happened outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. A masked gunman reportedly fled the scene on an electric bike. He vanished into Central Park, avoiding capture.
At the crime scene, detectives found shell casings marked with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose.” Those three words added to the mystery. Five days later, police arrested Mangione at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Officers allegedly recovered a silencer, a firearm, and a fake ID from him.
Investigators also found a three-page manifesto in his possession. A New York grand jury indicted Mangione on terrorism charges in December 2024. Later, those charges were upgraded to federal murder. State prosecutors also indicted him on additional charges. Those include stalking, use of a firearm in murder, and weapons violations.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty in both state and federal courts. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted on federal charges. State charges could bring life in prison.
Despite the serious allegations, Mangione receives public support. Letters and photos sent to jail show ongoing solidarity. In February, he said he felt “overwhelmed and grateful” for the support.
