Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill announced that her office will begin reviewing Dr. Anthony Fauci’s actions under state law. The announcement followed Fauci’s recent appearance before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. During that hearing, he repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination instead of answering lawmakers’ questions. Consequently, several state officials renewed calls for independent legal reviews.
Fauci, the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, invoked the Fifth Amendment 111 times throughout the hearing. Lawmakers questioned him about matters connected to the COVID-19 pandemic and previously released personal records. However, he declined to provide substantive responses while citing constitutional protections on the advice of legal counsel.
Murrill stated that Louisiana intends to examine whether any conduct could violate state criminal statutes. Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama argued that presidential pardons apply only to federal offenses. He stated that state authorities may still examine potential violations of state law where appropriate. Additionally, Tuberville said he would explore legal options if elected governor of Alabama. He also encouraged individuals to consider available civil remedies where permitted under state law.
The recent Senate hearing has become a central factor behind these state announcements. Lawmakers questioned Fauci extensively about his actions during the COVID-19 pandemic and related matters.
