Iran Negotiations entered a new stage Sunday as Vice President JD Vance arrived in Switzerland for talks with Iranian officials. The meetings follow a recent ceasefire framework. Officials aim to build a foundation for broader diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
Vance arrived shortly before 6 a.m. local time. He plans to join senior U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner during the discussions. Meanwhile, Swiss officials confirmed the arrival of the Iranian delegation. Delegates then traveled to Bürgenstock, where negotiators plan to hold the talks.
Organizers originally scheduled the meetings for Friday. However, Swiss authorities postponed discussions involving the United States, Iran, Qatar, and Pakistan. Despite the delay, participating delegations continued preparing for the next phase of negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to join the discussions. In addition, officials from several countries support continued diplomatic engagement. They believe the talks could help maintain regional stability and reduce tensions.
The meetings began days after President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran. Leaders reached the agreement after the G7 summit at the Palace of Versailles. The memorandum established a 60-day ceasefire. It also created a framework for future negotiations between the two countries.
Before departing Maryland, Vance said the trip should help establish a structure for future discussions. He explained that senior political leaders would direct negotiations. Meanwhile, technical teams would continue working on detailed issues.
Vance also said he expects to remain in Switzerland for one or two days. During that period, negotiators plan to develop procedures that support future diplomatic efforts. Officials hope those discussions will continue after the current meetings conclude.
According to Vance, negotiators will address several major topics. These topics include concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities. They also include efforts to maintain stability in Lebanon. Vance added that Iranian representatives would likely raise additional issues during the discussions.

Pakistan also announced that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will join technical discussions in Switzerland. Their participation highlights the broader international effort surrounding the talks.
