House Majority Whip Tom Emmer is urging the Senate to take action on legislation already passed by the House. He said lawmakers face a tight schedule before October and must prioritize several key measures.
Emmer identified short-term government funding as the immediate priority for House lawmakers. The continuing resolution would keep the federal government funded through December 11 and help prevent a shutdown.
However, Emmer also called for Senate action on several major bills that remain pending. He specifically highlighted the CLARITY Act, the SAVE America Act and reconciliation legislation.
The CLARITY Act focuses on digital assets and market structure rules. Emmer said the House approved the legislation about a year ago with support from nearly 100 Democratic lawmakers.
Meanwhile, Emmer said the SAVE America Act has reached the Senate several times without moving forward. He argued that senators now need to begin advancing legislation sent over by the House.
Emmer also pointed to reconciliation legislation as another measure awaiting Senate consideration. He said the Senate must start moving forward when lawmakers return to Washington.
At the same time, the House has several other legislative priorities on its agenda. These include appropriations bills and a surface transportation measure that lawmakers need to address by September 30.
Emmer said the continuing resolution could cover several of these priorities if Congress cannot complete them separately. Nevertheless, he maintained that the House has continued working and sending legislation to the Senate.
Congress has only 16 legislative days remaining before lawmakers leave again on October 1. Therefore, both chambers face increasing pressure to reach agreements on funding and other major legislation.
Emmer’s comments highlight growing frustration among House Republicans over bills awaiting Senate action. For now, he says the Senate must move legislation forward for Congress to achieve its remaining goals.
