Canada’s PM Mark Carney Chooses Europe Over US for First Foreign Trip, Sending a Message to Trump

In a significant diplomatic move, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney opted to visit Europe for his first overseas trip as leader, bypassing the traditional first stop in the United States. The decision underscores the strained relations between Canada and the US under President Donald Trump, who has imposed tariffs, mocked Canada’s sovereignty, and belittled former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Carney’s European tour began in Paris, where he was warmly welcomed by French President Emmanuel Macron. The two leaders emphasized their shared values and commitment to strengthening ties, with Carney describing Canada as “the most European of non-European countries” and pledging to be a “reliable, trustworthy, and strong partner” to France. Macron praised Canada as a steadfast ally, saying, “We’re welcoming a friend, and we’re receiving you with a lot of joy.”

The trip continued to London, where Carney met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and held a private audience with King Charles III, who serves as the head of state for both the UK and Canada. Carney and Starmer discussed deepening security, military, and economic ties, reflecting Canada’s efforts to diversify its alliances amid deteriorating relations with the US.

Carney’s visit comes as Canada faces unprecedented tensions with the US under Trump, who has proposed annexing Canada as the “51st state” and imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian goods. Carney dismissed Trump’s annexation comments as “unthinkable” and “disrespectful,” stating that such rhetoric must stop before meaningful discussions about the US-Canada partnership can occur. He also revealed that Canada is reconsidering its purchase of US-made F-35 fighter jets, signaling a potential shift in defense procurement.

Despite the tensions, Carney expressed readiness to engage with the US, saying Canada is prepared to discuss the broader commercial and security relationship “when the United States is ready.” His European tour highlights Canada’s strategic pivot toward strengthening ties with traditional allies while navigating the challenges posed by Trump’s “America First” policies.

The trip also underscores Carney’s commitment to reinforcing Canada’s sovereignty and global partnerships. As a former governor of the Bank of England, Carney’s familiarity with European leaders and institutions positions him well to navigate this diplomatic shift. His visit to Europe sends a clear message: Canada is seeking reliable allies in a rapidly changing global landscape.
