James Comer, the Republican chair of the committee, is probing whether senior Biden officials hid signs of President Joe Biden’s mental decline. Comer recently appeared on Fox News, hinting that Harris might soon be called to testify.
After Harris announced she would not run for California governor, Comer said this decision frees her up to appear before his committee. “The odds of Kamala Harris getting a subpoena are very high,” he declared on “The Ingraham Angle.”
Instead of pursuing elected office right now, Harris plans to travel the country. She wants to listen to Americans and support Democrats nationwide. On “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” she emphasized the need to protect democracy and said she is not seeking votes immediately.
Political analysts view a subpoena as a risky move for Harris if she plans a 2028 presidential run. Jonathan Turley, a law professor, called Harris a natural target for the probe. However, he noted that being forced to testify under subpoena would look bad for her public image.
Former Oversight Chair Trey Gowdy, agreed that Harris is a key witness. But he doubts she would cooperate fully, expecting legal battles over executive privilege. Gowdy said such privilege often delays congressional inquiries for years.
Both experts highlighted the need for precise questions from investigators. This approach would prevent Harris from giving vague or opinion-based answers. Gowdy added that while Congress can issue subpoenas, it lacks strong enforcement tools if witnesses refuse to appear.
Despite calls for Harris to testify, her spokesperson and Democrats on the committee have not commented. A Biden spokesperson also declined to address Comer’s subpoena remarks.
