UNM Dorm Shooting Leaves One Dead, Suspect in Custody

A deadly incident unfolded early morning at the University of New Mexico’s student housing. The UNM dorm shooting left one person dead and another injured. Authorities quickly responded to reports of gunfire at the Casas del Rio complex. The suspect was later arrested by U.S. Marshals in Los Lunas.

Shots rang out around 3:00 a.m., according to local sources. Students in the Gila building, however, reported hearing four to five gunshots just before midnight. They immediately followed shelter-in-place instructions. Officials confirmed the area remained an active crime scene well into the afternoon. Despite this, the university allowed dorm residents to eat at La Posada and return to their rooms while avoiding the crime scene.

Witnesses described the chaotic scene. Jubilee Tasi, a freshman from Seattle, said she heard three loud pops and saw people running. At the time, she and friends were watching a movie. She said she had not witnessed any disturbances since moving in weeks earlier. Tasi expressed her shock over the shooting, calling it “crazy” as she adjusts to life on campus.

University President Garnett Stokes released a statement confirming multiple shots fired in the early morning hours. The shooting resulted in one death and one injury, with the injured individual currently receiving hospital care. Neither victim’s identity has been made public.

The university urged students and staff to stay alert and monitor official communication channels, including email, text messages, and the LoboGuardian app, for real-time updates. Multiple law enforcement agencies remain on site, actively investigating the UNM dorm shooting.

This tragic event has shaken the campus community, prompting increased security measures and heightened awareness. The suspect remains in custody as authorities continue their work. The university continues to prioritize the safety of its students and staff while managing the ongoing investigation into the UNM dorm shooting.
