Apple’s Long-Awaited Siri Update Likely to Arrive Years Later Than Expected

Apple fans eagerly awaiting the long-promised overhaul of Siri, featuring a conversational AI powered by large language models (LLM), may face a much longer wait than originally anticipated. New reports suggest that Apple’s revamped Siri, expected to bring a more conversational approach, could be delayed until as late as 2027.

Back in June 2024, Apple announced its Apple Intelligence AI platform at WWDC 2024, which was to include significant updates to Siri. However, nearly a year later, many of the promised AI features have yet to materialize. Despite initial predictions that the update would arrive with iOS 18.4 in spring 2025, new developments indicate that a full rollout of a true conversational Siri powered by LLM technology is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

According to sources close to the project, Apple has fallen behind in integrating the necessary AI technology into its ecosystem. Originally expected to feature advanced conversational abilities akin to ChatGPT, the new version of Siri will likely take much longer to arrive due to delays in the development of Apple Intelligence and the integration of LLM technology into its operating systems.

The current plan is for LLM Siri to be introduced at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in 2025, with a launch scheduled for 2026 as part of iOS 19.4. However, this timeline too is now under doubt. Some insiders speculate that it could be pushed further, with the modernized Siri potentially not reaching consumers until iOS 20 in 2027.

As Apple continues to lag behind competitors in AI advancements, the tech giant faces the challenge of catching up to its rivals in the conversational AI space.
