Tim Cook Ends 15-Year Apple CEO Tenure

Apple is entering a major leadership change as Tim Cook prepares to leave the CEO position after 15 years. John Ternus will take over as chief executive on September 1, beginning a new chapter for the technology giant.

Cook became Apple’s CEO in 2011 after previously holding senior operational responsibilities within the company. During his tenure, Apple expanded its product portfolio while building an enormous global business around its devices and services.

However, Cook will not completely leave the company after the leadership change. Instead, he will become Apple’s executive chairman and continue contributing to several important areas.

Meanwhile, Ternus brings extensive experience from Apple’s hardware organization to the company’s top leadership position. He has served as senior vice president of hardware engineering since 2021 and oversees teams responsible for product development.

The upcoming Apple CEO transition comes after months of attention surrounding Cook’s eventual succession. Apple announced the leadership plan earlier this year, confirming Ternus as Cook’s successor.

Cook has expressed strong confidence in Ternus and his ability to lead Apple. In a farewell message, Cook described his successor as an accomplished engineer and thoughtful leader with exceptional attention to detail.

Ternus has already become a familiar figure during Apple’s major product presentations. He has appeared at company events to introduce new hardware, giving customers greater exposure to his role within Apple’s leadership team.

Consequently, his promotion could signal a stronger focus on hardware development and product design. Ternus has spent much of his career working directly with Apple’s hardware teams and product engineering operations.

The Apple CEO transition could therefore influence how the company approaches future product development. Industry observers expect Ternus to evaluate Apple’s existing design strategy while considering potential changes across upcoming devices.

Still, the exact direction of his leadership remains uncertain. Ternus could maintain many of Apple’s established strategies while gradually introducing his own priorities.

The leadership change also arrives during an important period for Apple’s product business. The company faces higher component expenses, particularly because of continued pressure across global memory supplies.

Those increased costs could influence product pricing and Apple’s broader hardware strategy. At the same time, Apple continues to maintain a strong position within the worldwide smartphone market.

Recent sales data has highlighted the strength of Apple’s current iPhone lineup. The iPhone 17 reportedly ranked as the world’s best-selling smartphone during the second quarter of 2026.

Furthermore, Apple’s premium models also performed strongly during the same period. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro reportedly occupied the next two positions in global smartphone sales.

Therefore, Ternus inherits a company with substantial market strength but several important challenges ahead. His hardware background could become particularly relevant as Apple develops its next generation of products.

Apple’s upcoming September event will provide an early test for the company’s new leadership structure. The event could introduce the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, a foldable iPhone, and updated Apple Watch models.

However, Cook’s continued involvement means the transition will not represent a complete separation. His executive chairman role could allow him to remain involved in important corporate matters.

In addition, Cook is expected to retain certain responsibilities involving Apple’s external relationships. That could include maintaining important government and business connections while Ternus focuses on his responsibilities as CEO.

For Apple, the change represents one of its most significant leadership transitions in years. Cook’s long tenure has shaped the company’s modern identity, operations, and approach to global growth.

Now, Ternus faces the challenge of guiding Apple through its next stage of development. His decisions could influence future product designs, hardware priorities, and the company’s broader technology strategy.

The Apple CEO transition officially begins September 1, ending Cook’s tenure as chief executive. Nevertheless, his continued presence as executive chairman means his influence at Apple will remain significant.
