Blanche Confirmation Hearing begins as Attorney General nominee Todd Blanche appears before the Senate Judiciary Committee for a closely watched confirmation process. Additionally, the hearing marks the committee’s first major nomination battle since the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, creating added attention around the proceedings.
Republican senators are working to maintain support for Blanche while addressing changes within the committee following Graham’s passing. Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn said Republican lawmakers are working to fill Graham’s vacant Judiciary Committee seat before the committee votes on Blanche’s nomination next week.
Blackburn also expressed confidence that senators would confirm Blanche as Attorney General. She said she expects him to continue efforts aimed at reducing crime, combating fraud, and addressing what Republicans describe as unequal enforcement of the law. Furthermore, she said confirming Blanche would honor Graham’s legacy and the priorities he supported throughout his Senate career.
The upcoming hearing represents Republicans’ first significant confirmation challenge without Graham’s leadership on the Judiciary Committee. Graham previously chaired the committee and became well known for his detailed questioning during high-profile confirmation hearings. Consequently, lawmakers now face the process without one of the party’s most experienced voices on judicial nominations.
Blanche has maintained a close professional relationship with President Donald Trump for several years. Before joining the administration, he served as Trump’s personal defense attorney and later helped lead Trump’s legal defense in multiple criminal cases. Trump and his supporters repeatedly argued those prosecutions were politically motivated.
After Trump returned to office, he appointed Blanche as Deputy Attorney General. Later, Trump selected him to succeed former Attorney General Pam Bondi as the administration’s nominee for the department’s top position.
Ahead of the hearing, Trump publicly praised Blanche in a social media statement. He said Blanche stood beside him during legal challenges connected to the 2024 presidential campaign. Trump credited Blanche with defending him throughout those cases and thanked him for his continued service.
Meanwhile, several conservative legal leaders urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to confirm Blanche without delay. In a joint letter sent to Chairman Chuck Grassley, they argued that Blanche has already demonstrated his legal qualifications through previous government service, private practice, and federal prosecution experience.
The letter also stated that Blanche accepted significant personal and professional sacrifices while representing Trump during major legal disputes. Supporters further argued that he already understands the Justice Department’s responsibilities and should continue implementing the administration’s priorities without interruption.
Democratic lawmakers, however, have voiced strong opposition to making Blanche’s appointment permanent. Several senators argued that his close relationship with Trump raises concerns about his independence if confirmed as Attorney General.
Senator Peter Welch said Blanche’s previous actions provide a clearer picture than his expected testimony before the committee. According to Welch, Blanche consistently placed Trump’s interests above other considerations throughout his legal career.
In addition, Senate Judiciary Democrats criticized Blanche through public statements on social media. They accused him of protecting Trump while taking actions they believe undermine civil rights enforcement and prosecutorial independence.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also criticized the nomination, arguing Blanche cannot serve as an independent Attorney General. Schumer questioned Blanche’s credibility and opposed confirming him to lead the Justice Department.
Supporters responded by emphasizing Blanche’s experience in the department and arguing that delaying confirmation would slow the administration’s policy agenda. They maintained that replacing him with another nominee would unnecessarily extend the confirmation process.
As lawmakers prepare for committee questioning, the Blanche Confirmation Hearing has become one of the Senate’s most closely watched confirmation proceedings this year. The committee is scheduled to begin the Blanche Confirmation Hearing at 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time before considering the nomination in the coming days.
