Body Of Missing Father Found After Idaho River Search

River Search efforts have located the body of a 55-year-old father who disappeared in Idaho’s Snake River Canyon after entering the water during a family trip. Authorities confirmed that Tory J. Raether, a man from Charlotte, North Carolina, went missing on July 4 after jumping into the river near a popular recreation area. The recovery ended a weeklong search involving multiple rescue teams, volunteers, and nearby campers.

Raether visited the region with his wife and one daughter while traveling to see another daughter who lives nearby. According to officials, he entered the Snake River at Jumping Rock without wearing a life jacket. Shortly afterward, he reportedly struggled with the strong current and could not return to shore.

People who were with Raether attempted to help him after he began facing difficulties in the water. However, their efforts did not successfully bring him back to safety. Rescue crews immediately began searching the area after receiving reports about his disappearance.

Furthermore, Star Valley Search and Rescue organized a large operation to locate Raether. The team used drones, boats, jet skis, and other equipment while covering different sections of the river. As the search continued, crews expanded their efforts toward Palisades Reservoir because they believed the current could have carried him farther from the original location.

After seven days, campers near McCoy Creek campground spotted a person in the water along the shoreline. The campers used paddleboards to reach the area and contacted emergency officials after identifying the discovery. Shortly afterward, rescue teams arrived and recovered Raether’s body from the river.

The River Search operation involved coordination between several emergency groups and local authorities. Officials worked together throughout the week while searching difficult areas affected by strong currents and changing water conditions. The recovery brought closure to Raether’s family after days of uncertainty.

Friends and family members remembered Raether as a caring person who loved spending time outdoors. His longtime friend Brad Johnson described him as someone who valued friendship, adventure, and the natural beauty of the region. Johnson said Raether had a strong connection to the Jackson Hole area and enjoyed returning there.

The incident also highlights the risks of entering open water without proper safety equipment. Although rivers and lakes attract visitors during warmer months, officials continue warning people about unpredictable currents and dangerous conditions. Life jackets and careful planning can reduce risks during recreational activities.

The River Search concluded after authorities recovered Raether’s remains, while officials continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. His family and friends now remember his life, his relationships, and the experiences he shared with those around him.
