A Houston ICE Shooting is under investigation after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer fatally shot a Mexican national during an attempted traffic stop and arrest on Tuesday.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, agents attempted to stop and arrest Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, who the agency said was living in the United States without legal authorization. Officials stated that Salgado Araujo refused repeated verbal commands during the encounter.
The agency alleged that Salgado Araujo rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle while attempting to avoid arrest. ICE further stated that he used his vehicle in an attempt to strike an officer. According to the agency, the officer responded by firing a weapon in self-defense.
Emergency responders transported Salgado Araujo to a nearby hospital following the shooting. He later died from the injuries he sustained during the incident.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is leading the investigation into the shooting. Officials also said the FBI’s Houston Field Office is investigating a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer connected to the encounter.
The incident marks the second shooting involving ICE personnel within less than a week. It also occurred during a period of increased immigration enforcement tied to President Donald Trump’s broader deportation agenda.
Salgado Araujo’s death prompted calls for transparency from community organizations and several Democratic lawmakers representing Texas. They requested an independent review of the incident and urged investigators to preserve and examine all available evidence.
The League of United Latin American Citizens called for a full and independent investigation. The organization also requested the release of available evidence and accountability if investigators determine wrongdoing occurred.
Representative Sylvia Garcia stated that ICE had provided an initial account of the incident. She said investigators should independently examine the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force. Garcia also called for preserving and reviewing all available video recordings, communications, and additional evidence.
Representative Christian Menefee echoed those requests. He urged investigators to make the findings public after completing the investigation.
The Houston ICE Shooting also drew a response from Salgado Araujo’s family. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, described his father as a hardworking construction worker who supported his wife and three children.
According to his son, Salgado Araujo had lived in the United States for nearly 35 years. He also stated that his father was pursuing a work permit through the legal immigration process. Ronaldo Salgado said his father was traveling to work and picking up coworkers when the shooting occurred.
Ronaldo Salgado also stated that his father did not deserve to die. He is expected to address the public during a scheduled news conference.
The shooting follows several immigration enforcement incidents over the past year that resulted in fatalities. Some previous cases generated public debate after video recordings raised questions about initial accounts provided by authorities.
One case involved the fatal shooting of 23-year-old U.S. citizen Ruben Ray Martinez during a traffic encounter last year. Federal officials stated that an agent fired after Martinez allegedly attempted to strike another officer with his vehicle. Later video footage did not clearly show the vehicle making contact with the agent. A Texas grand jury ultimately declined to issue indictments in that case.
Another case occurred in January when federal immigration personnel fatally shot 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Good during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis. Federal officials stated that she attempted to strike an agent with her vehicle. Local officials and witnesses disputed that account.
In May, authorities arrested a former federal agent and charged him with multiple assault counts and falsely reporting a crime. Prosecutors alleged he made false statements under oath regarding the nonfatal shooting of a Venezuelan man in Minneapolis earlier this year.
The Houston ICE Shooting remains under investigation as federal authorities continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding Tuesday’s fatal encounter.
