Michigan Senate Race Narrows After McMorrow Ends Campaign

Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow suspended her U.S. Senate campaign, reshaping the Michigan Senate Race less than a month before the Democratic primary. Her decision leaves Representative Haley Stevens and former Wayne County Health Department Director Abdul El-Sayed as the two leading Democratic candidates ahead of the August 4 primary.

McMorrow’s name will remain on the primary ballot because election officials had already printed ballots and distributed absentee ballots before her announcement.

The Democratic nominee will face former Representative Mike Rogers in the November general election. Rogers is widely expected to secure the Republican nomination as he seeks the Senate seat for a second consecutive election cycle.

The seat became available after Senator Gary Peters announced his retirement. Both major parties view the contest as highly competitive. Political analysts continue to rate the race as a toss-up.

McMorrow announced her decision in a video posted on social media. She did not explain why she ended her campaign. Instead, she thanked campaign staff, volunteers, and supporters for helping build a campaign funded primarily through small-dollar donations. She also highlighted that her campaign accepted no corporate political action committee contributions.

McMorrow struggled to match the fundraising totals and polling numbers of Stevens and El-Sayed. Throughout the campaign, she positioned herself between the ideological approaches represented by her two rivals.

She also pledged to support whichever Democrat wins the primary. McMorrow urged Democrats to unite behind the eventual nominee in the general election against Rogers.

Following the announcement, Stevens praised McMorrow as an important voice for Michigan families. Stevens also said she believes she is the strongest Democratic candidate in both the primary and general election. She added that her campaign will continue focusing on lowering costs, protecting manufacturing jobs, and opposing what she described as abuses of presidential power.

Stevens has received significant financial support from super PACs. Some of that support has come from organizations aligned with Israel.

El-Sayed also responded after McMorrow announced her decision. He praised her willingness to challenge what he described as a political system influenced by powerful interests. He acknowledged policy differences while expressing respect for her public service.

El-Sayed also criticized Democratic Party insiders for spending millions to influence the primary. He invited McMorrow’s supporters to join his campaign. His platform emphasizes reducing the influence of money in politics, expanding Medicare for All, and challenging the political establishment.

An epidemiologist by profession, El-Sayed previously ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018. Medicare for All remains a central issue in his campaign. He also supports abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, has criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, and has pledged not to accept political action committee donations.

Stevens has received support from Senate Democratic leadership and other establishment figures. El-Sayed has earned endorsements from Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Some Democratic leaders believe Stevens gives the party its strongest opportunity to hold the Senate seat. Others support El-Sayed’s progressive platform despite concerns that some of his previous statements could become campaign issues during the general election.

Republican officials argued that the Democratic primary reflects broader ideological divisions within the party. Meanwhile, the Michigan Senate Race enters its final weeks with two leading Democratic candidates competing for the nomination. The Michigan Senate Race will ultimately determine which Democrat advances to face Rogers in one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate contests.
