Maryland Primary Victory secured another term for Representative April McClain Delaney after she defeated former Representative David Trone in a costly Democratic primary contest.
The race became one of the most expensive intraparty battles of the 2026 election cycle. Both candidates used substantial personal wealth to support their campaigns throughout the closely watched contest.
McClain Delaney defeated Trone in the Democratic primary for a House district covering western Maryland. The outcome ended Trone’s effort to return to Congress after previously representing the district for three terms.
The campaign attracted attention because of the extraordinary amount of money spent by both candidates. Combined spending exceeded $32 million, making the contest one of the most expensive House primaries of the election cycle.
Trone, the billionaire founder of Total Wine & More, invested more than $25 million of his own money into the campaign. McClain Delaney, meanwhile, spent at least $7 million from her personal resources while defending her seat.
Before entering Congress, McClain Delaney served as a political appointee within the Commerce Department during the Biden administration. She won her first House term before facing Trone’s challenge this year.
Although the candidates shared relatively few major policy differences, the campaign became increasingly competitive. Trone criticized McClain Delaney for supporting the Laken Riley Act during early 2025.
The law requires authorities to detain certain undocumented immigrants accused or convicted of specified crimes. McClain Delaney later stated that she regretted voting in favor of the measure.
McClain Delaney also criticized Trone over campaign advertising related to abortion rights. She objected to references highlighting support from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton despite the absence of a formal endorsement.
The Maryland Primary Victory followed Trone’s unsuccessful statewide campaign two years earlier. During the 2024 Senate race, he spent more than $60 million before losing to Senator Angela Alsobrooks.
After that defeat, Trone endorsed McClain Delaney as his successor in Congress. Their later primary contest created an unusual political rivalry between former allies.
Much of Maryland’s Democratic establishment united behind McClain Delaney during the campaign. Governor Wes Moore, Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks, Representative Jamie Raskin, and former House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer all endorsed her candidacy.
Additional support came from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Trone, meanwhile, highlighted support from Maryland’s largest teachers union.
The district itself stretches from Maryland’s northwestern corner into the suburban communities of Montgomery and Frederick counties. Despite representing the district, neither candidate currently resides within its boundaries.
Both candidates live in Potomac, an affluent suburb located near Washington, D.C. The district remains Democratic-leaning, though President Donald Trump finished within six percentage points there during the 2024 election.
National Republican strategists have not identified the seat as a leading pickup opportunity. The Maryland Primary Victory therefore strengthens McClain Delaney’s position heading into the general election.
The result also extends a political connection between the district and the Delaney family. McClain Delaney’s husband, John Delaney, represented the same congressional district from 2013 through 2019 before launching an unsuccessful presidential campaign.
With the primary contest concluded, McClain Delaney advances toward another election campaign while maintaining support from many of Maryland’s most prominent Democratic leaders.
