A California woman left her corporate career to start a pug rescue effort that now helps thousands. The pug rescue effort has found loving homes for nearly 4,000 dogs since its founding in 2014. Gwenn Vallone stepped in when a local pug rescue closed, leaving about 100 dogs without anyone to care for them.
Vallone previously ran a direct-mail and data-processing business while volunteering at regional animal shelters and pug rescues. When the original rescue leader became too sick to manage operations, Vallone immediately recognized her responsibility to act decisively. She decided to launch Pug Nation Rescue of Los Angeles and ensure none of the animals went without love.
Initially, Vallone balanced her corporate work while taking in two dozen pugs from the closing rescue and nearby shelters. With the growing demand for foster homes, she eventually quit her business in 2014 to dedicate herself fully to the nonprofit. Vallone recalled feeling nervous about leaving her career but understood the importance of acting quickly for the animals.
Since then, the organization has grown steadily, housing dozens of dogs at any given time through volunteers and foster families. Vallone and her team have rehomed over 3,700 pugs while also hosting community events to increase awareness of dog adoption. The rescue continues to expand its network of volunteers to manage increasing needs and care for more dogs.
Now 61 years old, Vallone personally cares for two of her own rescued dogs with special needs, named Louis and Clam. She explained that running the rescue has taught her perseverance, patience, and compassion in ways she never expected. Vallone emphasized that dedicating her life to the pug rescue effort has given her a greater purpose and satisfaction.
Volunteers across Los Angeles regularly support Vallone’s work by fostering, transporting, and preparing dogs for adoption to ensure each pup finds a permanent home. The pug rescue effort continues to inspire the community while highlighting the importance of responsible pet care and adoption.
Gwenn Vallone’s story demonstrates how one person’s dedication can transform countless lives, making the pug rescue effort widely celebrated. Her efforts show that decisive action combined with compassion can build sustainable, life-saving programs for animals in need.
