Authorities and law enforcement experts believe the unusual holster, visible in doorbell camera video, may help narrow down potential suspects in the high-profile case.
Eighty-four-year-old Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson home during the early morning hours of February first. The case quickly drew national attention because she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie. Investigators later recovered surveillance footage showing a masked individual standing on her porch. Law enforcement officials also reported finding drops of blood at the residence.
According to authorities, the Federal Bureau of Investigation successfully retrieved video from a Nest doorbell camera despite technical complications. The footage shows a person wearing gloves, a backpack, and a holstered firearm. A law enforcement expert reviewing the video identified the holster as a Strategy brand hip holster sold at Walmart stores for approximately ten dollars.
The expert explained that infrared video can distort colors, making the holster appear lighter than it actually is. However, he pointed to distinctive stitching, material contrasts, and a retention strap that matched the retail product. The holster reportedly fits revolvers with barrels measuring between four and six-and-a-half inches. Investigators also noted that the firearm in the footage appears to be a semiautomatic pistol, an uncommon pairing with that particular holster design.
Retail availability may further assist investigators. The holster is not widely stocked and was reportedly available in limited Tucson-area locations. Experts believe fewer customers likely purchased the holster compared to other common accessories. As a result, authorities could cross-reference sales data to reduce the pool of potential suspects.
Additionally, the suspect wore an Ozark Trail backpack, another item sold at Walmart. Unlike the holster, the backpack is widely available and commonly purchased. Nevertheless, investigators may compare purchase records for both products to identify overlapping transactions.
Law enforcement agencies have increased public outreach in the case, including a $100,000 reward for information. Billboards and media alerts continue circulating across Arizona and neighboring states. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact investigators immediately.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues leading the investigation alongside federal agents.
